Halloween celebration would not be complete without the carving and decorating of pumpkins all around the corner. And it didn’t skip my curious mind to determine how it became the symbolic face of Halloween.
Tracing back the history, it is said to be originated from an Irish festival, an occasion of marking the passage from harvest season to the dark of winter. People would carve grisly faces into large turnips, set candles inside and rest them along the roads and fences to distract spirits from settling into houses and farms. As years went on, it was believed that Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America where pumpkins are abundant and it grew more popular and became an essential part of festivities.
